I'm using only authuserdb.
Userdb has only virtual users. All of the virtual users have
home=/var/maildirs/<username> and mail=/var/maildirs/<username>/Maildir
defined. They have the same uid and guid. The homedir of this uid is
/home/mailuser.
I've already tried if maildrop is lookingfor a .mailfilter file in
/home/mailuser - negative.
Should courier fail to start if .../etc/courierd is missing or if it has
illeagal lines? I moved this file just to test what courier is going to do.
It started anyway. I was wondering if maybe my build of courier somehow
ignores the file courierd. But it uses all other files - why should it fail
on this one.

Manfred
p.s. I left my office and I'm now at home. I will check e-mail from time to
time an try your suggestions. It's now 10:40 p.m. and I'm sure to give up at
about 11:30.
p.p.s. There are duplicates of some files ending with .dist in .../etc. For
what are these?

no .courier files around. Courier restarted.
I renamed the maildrop binary in order to see if local delivery results
in
an error message (something like "maildrop not found"). But delivery
works
without problems (except that maildrop doesn't work).
What authentication modules are you using and how are they configured?
