Didn't that have something to do with the long time required to prepare the message? Couriers sendmail has a timeout I think... sendmail itself doesn't.
May be wrong on this, but I think that had something to do with your problem - the pipe was opened at the beginning, and by the end of the big diffs, the timeout had occured.

This remains a problem.
The empirical evidence is that Courier's sendmail is broken. Am I incorrect? What other diagnostics can I provide?
Only once thus far have I encountered problems with courier's sendmail. I did a monster CVS checkin where CVS has a proggie that sends the diffs and other CVS into to my email. /Some/ of them (10+) failed (out of a hundred or more), for no reason that I've yet been able to dissect. Indeed, nothing was in the logs.
Maybe today is the day that I start running tests to figure out what's up.
