Not at all. It's an absolute symlink outside /usr/src.

Yes it is, because the symlink itself lives in /usr/src, so in order to create the link, /usr/src must initially be RW. The symlink is created 'during' builds, so you can't make it RO until after the 'make obj' step is done.
