A side note openldap on my system did not recognise ssl libraries as being
installed. I had to make sym links in the /usr and /usr/lib directories.

You can also do this to make the change permament (and is the 'recommended' way to add libraries to search paths):
crle -c /var/ld/ld.config -l /usr/local/lib:/usr/lib:/usr/lib/64:/usr/4lib:/usr/local/ssl/lib
(should be all one line)

Does anyone know what might be cuasing this?
This is caused by Solaris' brain damage. Verify that you have libgdbm.so in /usr/local/lib, then
LDFLAGS="-R/usr/local/lib" export LDFLAGS ./configure [options]
