"edgy" is the latest ubuntu release ... I have set up a mail server, using MySQL/postfix/courier. It's working quite well.

Hmm, so no sqwebmail then? That would explain why sqwebmail doesn't work :-P
Seriously - this is old stuff. If you have problems with these packages, the right place to go is the Debian maintainer, because only they will be interested in supporting old software.
