2008/5/14 Christopher Oliver <Chri@sun.com>:

JMC exposes native video decoding - e.g VC-1 on windows, H.264 on Mac OS, which is the mechanism used by the J1 demos. These codecs are controlled by the MPEG-LA, not by us, nor even by Apple or MS. Although JMC gives you access to such decoding mechanism - the royalty burden if any to MPEG-LA is essentially transfered to you, the user, as I understand it.

As far as the ON-2 codec Sun announced at J1, we ourselves haven't gotten the details yet - but should have them shortly I assume. I do know that the intention of the ON-2 codec is to provide a cross-platform codec as part of the java platform, which is freely usable by java developers.

Does this mean that Java can work with any CODEC installed on the user's machine. e.g. DIVX/XVID.
