I am not wedded to the current build but would not like to replace it with a less functional "almost" equivalent.
I suspect the timing to make such a change is from 1.7 onwards. That way we can jettison most of the current 1.4 jdk related bits to the build and get a cleaner fresh start with Gradle. The ant build can remain in place and let us push out 1.6.x interim releases if need be. Then use Gradle (presuming it is given the nod by then) to push out 1.7 betas etc. That gives us a little bit of time to get things in place.
But just on the "eat your own dog food" analogy, I think it will remain important to support ant groovy and groovyc tasks for numerous releases, so we should presumably still be eating that food too?

There's definitely no arm at all! I just don't want to waste Hans and Russel's time to make a new build, if the overal Groovy development team doesn't really care or need a new build. For instance, a while ago, Jason did a Maven 2 build, to replace the old Maven 1, but we switched to Ant in the end. So I prefer we spend our efforts appropriately in the most effective fashion.
This makes a lot of sense. There has to be a clear understanding if Groovy wants to move into this direction or not. Of course the final decision has to be based on an actual new running build. But we are all too busy to do futile work if it can be avoided.
Anyway, right now it is 1:1 (Jochen vs Guillaume) ;)
