You don't need any extra fields - just add "late" to the options column and teach mount(8) to ignore it.

Another option would be to use a magic number in the pass number field.

Sounds a bit hack-ish :-)

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but it's less dangerous during the transition than needing a special mount binary that knows how to ignore an option.
