~ 1000 users

OK, this is not that big in terms of users. Big would be in the 100,000+ range (and yes there are Courier installs this big).

Fine for me ;-)) Maybe I don't need 1000 cluster ;-))

In your opinion and experience can I use just one server for this ?

The heavy users would put a greater load on your servers. I would not recommend just one box for SMTP, AV/Spam scanning and IMAP. I would have 1 or 2 SMTP Servers (possibly more depending on the level scanning you are doing per message). And a handful of IMAP Servers. All servers should have access to the same mailstore server or, if it's in your budget get a SAN.

OK.

I've make some test (before I'm asking this mailing list) I've create a mailbox with ~ 30 000 messages (I've one case in my users...). With Courier-imap & Thunderbird (under FreeBSD 5.4-Stable with 1Go ram and Xeon 2.4 Ghz) I can't event delete those messages. I can understand this is extreme test. But I've some extremes users ;-)

Something is wrong with your test. I have folders with 50,0000 - 100,000 messages and message deletion is still immediate. Care to expound upon the problem?

You right, I'm wrong. It's the MUA can't handle this lots of message. When I use my favorite MUA (mutt) everthing work fine. I've just make a deletion test for 82000 messages: 4 minutes CPU on the server. Impressive....

Lots of thanks.

Regards.
