Subject:[courier-users] deferred status received on working courier server (certain received emails are not getting through from certain domains)
From:brian (bri@authorityserver.com)

List:net.sourceforge.lists.courier-users

I am receiving a deferred status for a set of emails from one email server. The deferred status in the maillog does not say why a particular email was deferred just that it was. I regularly receive email for this account (6 months now) and have not had any problems thus far.

The offending email server is mail.hipersoft.com, which is owned by one of my clients I do consulting with and the person in charge is outraged by the fact that he cannot get a hold of me via email (go figure).

An interesting side note to this problem is that there was no problems before with receiving emails from this email server and that some emails do get past the deferred status and I actually receive those messages.

They are running groupwise: hps-nw GroupWise Internet Agent 5.5.4 Ready (C)1993, 1998 Novell, Inc.

and that particular email server does not accept any ICMP requests so it cannot be pinged.

I am running courier-0.37.3 with ldap authentication. I also have a maildrop filter running but the emails that are deferred don't even get there.

I get the following below: Oct 21 10:11:01 localhost courierlocal: id=0001EE47.3DACE2A9.000043B0,from=<jmax@hipersoft.com>,addr=<briann@aut horityserver.com>,status: deferred Oct 21 10:11:01 localhost courierd: completed,id=0001EE47.3DACE2A9.000043B0 Oct 21 10:11:01 localhost courierd: Waiting. shutdown time=Mon Oct 21 10:28:07 2002, wakeup time=Mon Oct 21 10:12:44 2002, queuedelivering=9, inprogress=0

I also get the same error from bug-@gnu.org Oct 21 09:55:59 localhost courierlocal: id=0001EE4D.3DB0752C.00000988,from=<bug-@gnu.org>,addr=<brian@au thorityserver.com>,status: deferred Oct 21 09:55:59 localhost courierd: completed,id=0001EE4D.3DB0752C.00000988 Oct 21 09:55:59 localhost courierd: Waiting. shutdown time=none, wakeup time=Mon Oct 21 09:56:00 2002, queuedelivering=9, inprogress=2

Other deferrals include:

,module=esmtp,host=777.net.cn,addr=<Mega@777.net.cn>

Oct 21 09:44:53 localhost courierd: Waiting. shutdown time=none, wakeup time=Mon Oct 21 09:45:59 2002, queuedelivering=9, inprogress=4 Oct 21 09:44:54 localhost courieresmtp: id=0001EE4B.3DAC3277.00003826,from=<>,addr=<Mega@777.net.cn>: Connection reset by peer Oct 21 09:44:54 localhost courieresmtp: id=0001EE4B.3DAC3277.00003826,from=<>,addr=<Mega@777.net.cn>,status: deferred Oct 21 09:44:54 localhost courierd: completed,id=0001EE4B.3DAC3277.00003826 Oct 21 09:44:54 localhost courierd: Waiting. shutdown time=none, wakeup time=Mon Oct 21 09:45:59 2002, queuedelivering=9, inprogress=3 Oct 21 09:44:54 localhost courierd: Waiting. shutdown time=none, wakeup time=Mon Oct 21 09:45:59 2002, queuedelivering=9, inprogress=3

Oct 21 09:45:21 localhost courieresmtp: id=0001EE6A.3DB0C5E1.00000F25,from=<>,addr=<just@xmailsex.com>: Connection timed out Oct 21 09:45:21 localhost courieresmtp: id=0001EE6A.3DB0C5E1.00000F25,from=<>,addr=<just@xmailsex.com>,status: deferred Oct 21 09:45:21 localhost courierd: completed,id=0001EE6A.3DB0C5E1.00000F25 Oct 21 09:45:21 localhost courierd: Waiting. shutdown time=none, wakeup time=Mon Oct 21 09:45:59 2002, queuedelivering=9, inprogress=2

but who wants to receive email from xmailsex or net.cn? (not me)

The latter deferred messages actually have a reason why they were deferred, but the former do not.

I don't know if this is a configuration setting such as DNS, but my dns is properly configured and I am receiving email for everything else perfectly. Perhaps there is something that the offending email servers have mis-configured such as MX record and such? I doubt it, their MX record looks good.

Again any and all help is appreciated.
