Did you make sure you kept the same ownership and permissions on the binary, when you copied it over. It's probably easier to use a soft link (and make sure apache is told to FollowSymLinks).

OK I removed the copied binary, then added FollowSymLink to cgi-bin, made a link to the binary, restarted the server, and I get the same authentication error invalid user id or password.
