Nope, i never compile (or check) as root

It seems something similar to the "old" unsigned long/int problem and not a 32/64bit miscoding infact i compiled the package under Alpha Linux (same processor, different os) and it compiles and checks perfectly

It's not. The test in question tries to read a directory which supposedly does not have read permissions. This has something to do with file permissions semantics...
