Thanks, fellas. I got it working this weekend with Kevin's (Rutledge) help. Originally, I installed the server under the 'program files' directory, which MySQL didn't like. Once I moved it to the default directory, used the 'my.ini' file in the Windows directory, and reinstalled the service, everything was fine.

I think you have a mistake in your my.ini file.

If you start a command prompt window, and then start the service within it, it should print you out an error message that you can read. It's important that you start the command prompt window first, so that it doesn't close before you can read the message.
