thanks for the help! Shame on me - now it worked with synaptics on Ubuntu 8.1. All 42 packages of pd-extended were found. No special tricks are needed. But I still don ´t know, why it didn´t work the 10 times before.-
One more question: are there any risks of conflicts, if I install severeal versions of pd? Specially one pd-extended and one pd-vanilla.- thanks.-

Yes, I also installed pd extended via ubuntu package management two days ago and it worked fine.
Maybe you forgot to make an update ;) ? Try: apt-get update apt-get install pd-extended
