That, pretty much, says it all.

The Status: header is used in mbox files only to save the message's status (read/unread, etc) simply because there's no other way to do it.

With maildirs, the filename flags serve that purpose, and the Status: header is not used. Mail clients that expect to see a Status: header are broken.
