Gaieus,

Just the beginning to let you see what I was talking about and why I love boats. I didn't finish scaling in all directions and rotating yet but couldn't wait to see if this plan is useful. For the time being it's okay. Here is the link: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=ca605296f19c3cd8150f2511170880f I'll keep you posted although it might take a while before I go on.

Wodan,

A good plan for a boat (ship) usually contains the sections of the individual ribs, too. I think that if you really want to make a very nice (and especially detailed) hull, you'll need to draw those ribs, as well, and since (by default) you draw curves, beziers etc. with the same number of segments, hand stitching could result in a nicer and more consistent hull (SSB sometimes creates weird edges - especially where the squares it is made up of are chopped off at the edges). Moreover, if you look at the hidden geometry in my Viking boat, you'll find that from that geometry, a nice planking cannot easily be made (and therefore texturing is also difficult).

Anyway, whenever you get there, don't forget to "consult" me (not as if I knew everything but just because I'm interested...)

Have fun; Gai...

Wodan,

As far as I can remember, SSB now works with the free version (SU6), too. Maybe Gully could tell - he uses it and at home he has the free version (while in his office he works with the pro).

Anyway, try to get it started (you'll need a little time to get a good grab of it), the link is here (well, a "boat example" but you can go to the software page):http://www.tensile-structures.de/sb_examples.html

Have fun; Gai...

p.s. I myself do not really work with boats either and Hungary does not even have a seside - it's just some kind of romantic hobby which remained from my childhood...

The Viking Longboat I have seen, very nice indeed. And the effect of using the Soap,Skin and Bubbles plugin on hull and sail! Very nice rounded shapes. I am and have always been interested in beautifully curved hulls of sailing vessels, yachts, like the Endeavour I (1934) and Rainbow. There are so many. If I can find the time I want to create a reconstruction of such a hull in SU. And eventually completely rigged. I therefore need a good detailed plan. And maybe that S,S and B... plugin. Is that a ruby? And is it really free to be used with SU6- free. I couldn't find any link to it.

best regards, Wo3Dan

p.s. designing yachts has nothing to do with my work although who knows, maybe in the future. ;-)

Any kind (but preferably "old" boats like sailing boats and such). Have a look at the Viking longboat I made below.

I have just downloaded carmelite.mov and opened it in QT as you suggested. Very nice job Gaieus and a lot of work was involved I suppose. Thanks for sharing.

An other thing, somewhere you said that you love boats. What kind of boats, if I may ask?

Nehmo,

Actually both browsers should be able to download (or play with their QT plugins). I myself use FF too, but IE should also "see" it.
