Subject:Slow JDBC Queries when Column Count High

I am running JMeter tests on the queries in our system and I have come across a major issue. I have this problem with JMeter client on Windows XP, Java 1.4, with both the 1.3 and 2.0.4 MySql JDBC drivers. When I run

select aa, ab, ac, ad, ae, af, ag, ah, ai, aj, ak, al, am, an, ao, ap, aq, ar, as, at, au, av, aw, ax, ay, az, ba, bb, bc, bd, be, bf, bg, bh, bi, bj, bk, bl, bm, bn, bo, bp, bq, br, bs, bt, bu, bv, bw, bx, by, bz

from my_table where aa='Value';

The queries average 200ms, but when I run

select aa, ab, ac, ad, ae, af, ag, ah, ai, aj, ak, al, am, an, ao, ap, aq, ar, as, at, au, av, aw, ax, qy

from my_table where aa='Value';

with the same tables, the queries take about 5ms.

Hash anyone seen a problem like this before? steve
