It's a PVS or Private Virtual Server, similar to VMware, by Ensim technology
(www.ensim.com). I think it's a side effect of that technology that is
causing this.
I've installed courier on many many machines and never had this problem.
This is for my personal site, which I'm moving to a hosting company that
provides this service.
I can create files, and have no problems with files (very few on the system
overall).
Strange.

So, how does one get around this? Should I/can I eliminate that check
and
still be safe? I'm not delivering a huge amount of mail here, and it's
very
unlikely that I will ever run out of space.

You have a 2GB hard drive with 1 just over a million files, directories,
and links in 588 MBytes?
You should count your files... Look for tmp directories with lots of 0
byte files.
