Actually there is one thing different.. It printed..

I tried disabling ACPI altogether but the system doesn't boot :( I get a lot of.. interrupt storm detected on "irq5:"; throttling interrupt source

I found that there was a recent BIOS update and that appears to have fixed the problem (as well as the ACPI spam I was getting during module probes).
