3X) hypothetical step if triggers were able to check content, you'd transfer the files at this point, and check them. What would you do with them, because you can't yet submit them yet? -- place them all in a cache or on disk somewhere? what if there were 10,000 files? -- take the time to do the diffs, saving the more compact diffs, even though you might have to throw it away? -- discard each file after processing all of the triggers with it (requiring it to be transferred AGAIN for submission (oh my!))

Remember, the request was for the ability not just to check each file but to modify it. The choice is whether to cache the results or to repeat both the transfers and the processing.

2) Many people consider it the duty of a CM system NOT to change files in any way.

That's the biggest reason I'd never use the requested feature in the way that was described. I want the code to be tested before it's checked in, and I want what's checked in to be exactly what was tested.

I'm not comfortable with Perforce's current line-ending processing, because the documentation doesn't spell out the semantics sufficiently explicitly that I can understand them.
