How do I get better than 800x600 and 16bit display?

Are you already using a build of the latest open GFW? If not, try using this pre-compiled binary:

http://free.linux.hp.com/~awilliam/ia64_open_gfw_cset38.bin

Point your kernel= line in the domain config file to a local copy of the file.
