Could someone give me a quick explanation of what the email integration feature is about?

Also I can't tell from the requirements list if an IMAP server is needed, and I'm not sure that my webhost offers that

"The email integration module requires PHP's IMAP extension and also a POP3/IMAP server that allows connections to their appropriate ports."

The php imap ext is needed but either pop3 or imap server? It does not exactly make sense to me. If only a pop3 server is needed then I'm in good shape.
