if you are running Windows 2000/NT you don't have mysql set up as a service, or it is not started.
In mysql\bin directory run "mysqld-nt --install" then run "mysql"
if you have mysql already setup as a service you can run "net start mysql"

Hello, I downloaded MySQL yesterday and bought the core Mysql book however when i try to run it by typing mysql at the command prompt under c:\mysql\bin directory keeps giving me the message "Error 2003: can't connect to mysql server on localhost <10061> " i did everything right put under c:\mysql and put the my.ini file under the c:\windows and put basedir=c:\mysql what is the problem why can't I run the sqlserver.
