Microsoft supports SIP federation, and there is a fee to federate with AOL, MSN or Yahoo using the Microsoft Communicator client and a Corporate OCS infrastructure. I asked Microsoft about XMPP federation, and was told they have no plans to add XMPP support to LCS/ OCS, they only support SIP.

Why not use a real XMPP server to federate with the rest of the XMPP system? I seriously doubt Microsoft's SIP implementation is fully compatable with the rest of the world anyway; you're just better off trying an entirely different method.

Correct. LCS and OCS use "MS-SIP", with many proprietary extensions that are not part of the SIP/SIMPLE standards.
