Hi Stewart --
This is easy - as surely you have more than two PCs around. Anyway, a new PC is so cheap these days that in the hours you spend fiddling around trying to get 2 nodes going instead of 3, you could have bought a third machine and be in the "good zone".[2]
[2] The best illustration of this I heard recently was how much it would cost to get online filesystem shrinking of XFS volumes implemented. At the current cost of storage and experienced XFS developers - it would take a couple of months at 120 gigabytes per hour. That's a lot of storage. When trying to save money on hardware, have a good look at this form of argument. Hardware is cheaper than people.
I want to add a factor which is not present in your model, but is definitely in mine: Hosting and maintenance.
I'm working on a system which cannot ever go down. (I imagine that most people considering MySQL clustering are in a similar boat.) As a result, I am using bullet-proof, fully managed hosting. In my case, Rackspace. Each server is costing me roughly between $600 and $900 (USD) per month. At that cost, adding a third server is not a minor factor -- it is a potential deal buster.
Warmest regards,
-Jesse-
