Paul, I just got my copy of O'Reilly's MySQL book, and I'm quite a bit underwhelmed. How does it compare to the book you're working on?

Howdy. I'm Blain (not Paul).

I'm sorry the O'Reilly book didn't rock your world. It does rock mine. It was a good introduction to a whole bunch of things that I had been trying to find references for on the net, and was unable to find for a long time. I bought a book on SQL in general while waiting for this one to come out, and found it useless to me because it didn't help me get my feet wet in the topic. I hope that, as I get stronger in using this product, the other book will come in handy.

I don't think this need be the end of O'Reilly books on MySQL (or any other books on MySQL, for that matter). Look at all the books O'Reilly has published on Linux and Perl. This is, IMO, the best book to start with since it will help beginners get started and functioning. Something analogous to the Perl Cookbook would be a nice next book, IMO (feel free to take the idea, anybody -- I'm not anywhere close to writing it). It sounds like Paul's book will be a good addition to the greater body of information on MySQL. Might well be my next computer book purchase.

Take care, Blain
