Regarding the directory, gadgets are ranked based on popularity. When searching for gadgets, make sure your gadget's metadata contains the terms that you're searching for. By metadata, I mean the various informational attributes within <ModulePrefs>, e.g. title, description, author, etc. Search is also sensitive to word-spacing. For example, if the description contains the word "helloworld" and you search for "hello world", it probably won't find because of the missing whitespace. So make sure the terms are somewhat fine-tuned.
You can also search for the gadget URL: (googlecode.com - Search for all gadgets hosted on Google Code Hosting)http://www.google.com/ig/directory?q=googlecode.com

Another trouble is, the gadgets are placed in directory on the second page of an category, but not all of them can be found by search. How does the index work?
