OR... import Vim and get rid of nvi? :-) ..snip.. The maintainer reserves the right to include any changes in the official version of Vim. This is negotiable. You are not allowed to distribute a modified version of Vim when you are not willing to make the source code available to the maintainer.

Uh... did you read this part __carefully__??

I don't see a problem there. It's not like we're going to hide the source to FreeBSD from the vim maintainer. OTOH, I don't really think we need a "better" vi bad enough to lump in vim.

I am very surprised to hear this coming from you -- a commercial embedded developer. Remember, FreeBSD isn't the end of all -- rather we offer something others can take, modify, commercialize, propietize, and not give away the crown jewels.

But the likelihood of putting vi on an embedded system is low, and the likelihood of putting a modified vi on an embedded system is very very small. The likelihood of putting a 1.2 megabyte vi on *my* embedded system is so small science has not yet invented an instrument that can measure it.

What I'm saying is there are better arguments against vim than the license.
