Subject:[courier-users] Considerable time when "550 unknown user" error msg. at local domain

Hi,

I use courier 0.48.2, courier authlib 0.53 with mysql (3.23.58-4) authentication. Also use Virus checking via the courier filter.

The whole system works fine, but recently notified that the incoming mails - from the Internet - suffer considerable delay. Tracking the problem we found out that it is caused by the huge amount of spam mails, where the local domain is correct, but the addressee is wrong so courier gives back an:

550 User unknown

error message. This is all right, the only problem is that this response arrives after a considerable time. It takes at least 8 secs, but sometimes even 2 mins. The more unknown addressee in the mail the longer time passes to the error message.I think courier checks them one by one.

This happens only with the local domain (mail.vpop.hu at my case), a bad outside addressee or mistyped domain mails accepted at once. The good mails accepted also without delay.

I tried the mysql select by hand with the same user what courier uses -> it produces the empty select at once (0.00 sec) so this couldn't be the reason. Checked the maillog - nothing, except for the above error message.

Could you help me please what should I check or do to eliminate this long waiting time for the unknown addressee of the local domain?

Thanks in advance.

Zsolt Sandor
