Is there no way to make use of this high memory? Not even as a ramdisk or something? Or does any access at all require PAE36?

Apart from PAE36, there is no way to make the CPU drive the four most significant address lines.

It's maybe something to think about in the future, but the work required is non-trivial. We expect that people with big memory requirements will move to x86-64 so we will concentrate on that first.
