I've lately been playing with an http-push library called orbited[0]. It's lightweight and pretty easy to understand.

I found that they had some tutorials that walk though setting up a simple web chat using either Rails or CherryPy, so I recreated the tutorial as a Pylons application. The folks behind orbited added it to the tutorials section[1] so you can have a look at it if you'd like. The tutorial should be quick and easy and it illustrates some of the ideas behind orbited.
