If I telnet to port 25 I see that this delay is due to courier's slow response time for the initial connection. (i.e. it takes about 25 seconds for the first "220 adrenalinerh ESMTP" to show up. After it finally responds, though, things work fast.

What's wrong? Is there a way to speed things up?

Either the reverse/forward DNS lookup, or identd, is stalling. 30 seconds is the timeout for identd, so I'm supposing that identd is timing out.
