Make sure that MAXDAEMONS and MAXPERIP in /etc/courier/imapd are set appropriately. By default courier only allows 4 connections per IP. I know that when using Mail and the limit is too low I get an SSL error and then go offline.

That seems to have been my problem as well, i set the maximum to 100 and everything works fine. I don't worry too much about overload, there are only two users on that server.

no problem. I was having the problem at work, and totally forgot to take into account that all of my users were on the same IP because of NAT. oh well. :)
