the 8250 family UARTS, and macrocells compatible with them, are used on a staggering array of computing hardware. Look at the Alpha platforms that are a hot FreeBSD port target for example.

In which case, they can stick with the C version -- or, if they need performance, do a tuned ASM version for that processor.

so... are you proposing to maintain the assembly sio driver for the rest of time? and include ANY C modifications that happen in to the new driver?? and provide the ability for selection of the C version so they can have a functioning driver?

just so every one know... I've started working on the sio... and will be adding Bruce's/Poul-Henning's idea of using a ioctl to set the Tx/Rx FIFO trigger level.. I've already implemented the ring check, but I haven't tested it... but that improvement won't be as important once I get it so it only checks ports that are assigned to that irq..

I've also started working on supporting the IVR that 4port AST's and other cards provide... but as usual, free time is always scarce...

ttyl..
