I linked to CodeSourcery's libc with the -static flag. I probably just need to download the source to the dev tool chain, and compile a local version. That would let me put printfs inside the source code for select. It's a huge PITA, but until Google releases code, what can you do? I'm also a bit worried about Google's custom libc version. Will it make applications hard to port? Can we rename our own build of libc to something else and have all our open-source apps link to that? It's not good having to link .5 Mb to every app.
