This response is not directly related to Courier, but I decided to put it here anyway, since it may help some people running a service based on Courier.
There are several issues with OE (and Outlook as well) and it seems more likely that it is related to OE than the OS.
Accounts defined in OE simply stop working without any obvious reason and without giving any proper error messages. Synchronise the account and the MSbox does not even send any packets to Courier. The only workaround for this problem, that I have seen several times at several different users, was to erase the account and define the same account again.
Outlook (in particular) usually run ning WinXP, sometimes managed to messup network connections and decided by its own that a new mailserver should be the default (and only) server to talk to. The definitions for the Courier has been replaced.
And, forbidden, do not let users have Dlink DI-604 NAT boxes between the client and the mailserver. I have got so many complaints about the Courier box not working properly. In fact what happend at several users multiple times, is that the Dlink NAT box improperly relay DNS entries so that IP addresses for the Courier box points somewhere else (a random address). Since a user will not be notified, the result is "Mailserver does not respond" and Courier is blaimed.
As a matter of fact my Courier boxes run unattended. The software seems to be very stable. Nothing has been needed from system management point of view since I started the two machines I am runnning since about 150 days ago.

It depends how you define "production environment".
By "production environment", in this case, I mean this: users expect their mail to work without any real issue. I can give them guidelines (i.e. not to use folder synchronization) but if they follow the guidelines they expect their mail clients to work 100%. If they have problems they call me (and I'd like to avoid it).
I have ran COurier on two parallel RH8 systems for almost a year with some 100 accounts where almost all of them use OE and I would say that you may experience some problems, but those are not on the Courier side but on
OE.
What are the problems that you experienced?
Thank you very much for your help!

Hi all! I'm working on a quite critical email project. We want to use Imap in order to reduce client management complexity (email backups, etc...).
I'm using very happily Courier Imap and Mozilla since 2 years now so I'm very confident with Mozilla and Courier Imap interoperability.
But now we would need to deploy IMAP to 300 users and we need also to select an IMAP client. The more obvious choise would be outlook express (for a number of reason).
I've tested for a couple of days OE 6 without any serious problem. The only drawback is that it tries to always download attachments from the server even if I "click" on them.
The questions are: - What is your experience with the combination of OE and Courier Imap? - is the Imap interoperability robust enough to use it in a production environment? - Which are the release combinations that can be considered "stable"?
Thanks to everyone for feedbacks!
Ciao Paolo
