Thomas,
I recently installed 3.23.22 on my WIN98, p400 machine with little
difficulty. Although there are GUI's for administration, you can open a DOS
prompt, switch to your install directory (c:\mysql\bin on my machine) and type
mysql. You will get a command line interface and you can treat the manual this
way
c:\mysql\bin> mysqld Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g. Your MySQL connection id is 1 to server version: 3.23.33
Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer
mysql>
From this point you can enter commands directly to mysql. Quit will end
your session. I have just setup apache, jdk1.3, php, mysql on my WIN98 machine
and while it took a little tweaking it seems everything is working ok. -- I
have had problems with Tomcat and mod_jk -- but things are progressing. Good
Luck.

Dear Sir or Madam,
Re: Installation MySQL version 3.23.22-beta.
I am awfully sorry to bother you with some basics. I am a novice. I am trying
to use the above on my PC which is running on Windows 98. In WinMySQLAdmin,
my.ini set up appears complete. I have looked at the starting tutorial in the
manual which I downloaded along with the above but I do not find your
instructions very helpful. (shell> suggests you have written the manual for
Unix users?) Will I be able to enjoy the benefit of this software in my current
Windows environment? Is it necessary for me to run my PC either on Windows NT
or Windows 2000 to have the full benefit of your SQL software?
Your kind reply, however brief, would be very much appreciated.
