I've come across this problem as well. I believe (but have not yet confirmed) that RTF *can* support embedded images. The issue is that the RTF backend in Jade does not support image embedding, just linking to external images.
If so, then it should be possible to post-process the RTF output (with Perl or some other script) to embed the linked images. But given how nasty RTF is as a format, I doubt it'll happen anytime soon.
The RTF specification is available as download from MS, I think. Finding images in Jade's output is trivial. Btw., no size information can be attached to the field code wich is used to embed the images into RTF by Jade.
Just FYI: We have a specification document in DocBook containing several diagrams. The RTF output from Jade is about 2.5MB, updating the images and saving it results in about 500MB, saving it as ".doc" yields about 10MB, just the size you'd get if you add the size of the JPG-images. I think there are no compressed image formats available in RTF.
