This is a bug in OE, since if I go to Evolution it displays properly. However the classic IMAP server that ships with Redhat does not expose this bug.

Must be because the classic imap doesn't use Maildir structure with markings to mails. OE* seems to simply fuck up on it's internal list of what it believes to be going on.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to whats happening and what workarounds are possible?

Nope, I gave up. Instead I created a script the mailadmin (not me) can use from the webmin utility' custum buttons to move mails from selected users from directory cur to new.

One thing that may help the frequency of the problem is to only subscribe to the very nessesary folders and only get headers, not complete messages.
