Trussing the imaplogin process and its children reveals that, in fact, it is trying to setgid itself to a highly unlikely gid:

setgid(-2130640640) Err#22 EINVAL

I remember seeing this before when someone misconfigured vpopmail. Unfortunately, I do not remember what they did wrong. Go over your vpopmail setup.
