Thank you for your response Rene,
Yes, I have admin rights.
Well, I ran it again and I was online this time and confirmed my registration. It gets weird from here. It installed okay. I can now use it but it was not able to set my security settings when I used the Config Wizard (which is not a big deal in my case). And I just looked and I do NOT have a my.ini in C:/Windows. So I went to the services display and looked at MySQL properties and it was put where MySQL was installed. I actually prefer it this way as searching for ini files throughout /windows can be a pain, especially if I uninstall an application. (I won't for MySQL, but in general that is my feeling.) So I don't know if being online to the Internet let the install "get" something or what. But it is going now!
So I don't know what gives but it is working okay. I STILL feel an error message should carry complete information and not leave one guessing. I do blame MySQL for that. But, PLEASE don't get me wrong, I do LOVE MySQL. I do understand that there are millions of different configurations of PCs out there and anything is bound to happen. BUT, a message saying a file is missing and not naming the file makes troubleshooting a wee bit hard. LOL That is my gripe, not MySQL not installing.
Thanks for the response.
Mike

Hello Michael. I insalled the MySQL on a windows 2000 box on the september the 16. I can see that it have been installed on c:\MySQL I also got a ini file in C:\winnt which is called my.ini. In my case have run winMysqladmin because in the ini file it is stated that my.ini have been created by winMysqladmin. WinMysqladmin is placed in c:\mysql\bin. I also set service to start manually because I not wants the service every time I start my laptop where I have installed MySQL. Hope that it helps and that you are not give MySQL all the blaime for not running in your case. Are you sure you have the rights to install the software you need the administrator rights on a xp pro.

No, I did not install it there but I would hope the installer would be smart enough to figure that out. It was. I checked the services for MySQL and it has everything set perfectly. You got me thinking so I checked the my.ini for file locations in it and everything is okay there.
I think it is poor that there is a file error and the name of the file cannot be included. I would think better of such a solid product as MySQL. I'm very surprised and not happy about it.

Can you confirm that you installed MySQL into c:\mysql? If you chose different the service may need to be updated to look for the executable in the correct directory.

Trying to Install 4.1.6 with MSI Installer
I went through the install with no problems and came to the execute to start the database and I get a file not found. There is no file name so I am assuming it is my.ini. my.ini is in the /windows folder as put by the install wizard. A filename would be nice so I know what to look for!
Event Viewer/Application says
Product: MySQL Server 4.1 -- Installation operation completed successfully.
Event Viewer/System says
The MySQL service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.
I need to get this installed right away as I have projects depending upon this. Anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
