Unable to open mailbox

I did research all morning and still can not beat the error above. I looked on google and some people seem to be able to solve the problem by either using chmod 600 or chmod 700 (I found people suggesting both).

When I used the chmod 600 command however I get a different error:

"Unable to change to home directory"

I do not know if this helps to understand the problem I am facing. I am lost and do not know what I did wrong (since I followed the tutorials on the web).
