I had tried this... I said so, here's a sample ldap log output:

Jul 11 19:15:45 dedos slapd[22180]: conn=8 fd=15 \ ACCEPT from IP=127.0.0.1:4693 (IP=0.0.0.0:389) Jul 11 19:15:45 dedos slapd[22211]: conn=8 op=0 \ BIND dn="cn=Admin,ou=Service,o=My" method=128 Jul 11 19:15:45 dedos slapd[22211]: conn=8 op=0 \ RESULT tag=97 err=49 text= Jul 11 19:15:45 dedos slapd[22180]: conn=8 fd=15 closed

The ldap.conf line says: binddn cn=Admin,ou=Service,o=My Organization

FYI, OpenLDAP 2.1.21, RedHat 7.3. I compiled OpenLDAP. gcc is from rpm (gcc-3.2-7) as well as glibc (glibc- 2.3.2-4.80.6).
