We would love to expose that data in API form. Unfortunately the
companies that provide us with the industry/sector categorizations and
fundamental data do not allow us to redistribute that in an API =(.
What we can redistribute in an API consumable way is Google Finance
generated content, or content generated through our algorithms, not
from a 3rd party provider. These include company categorization of
news and blogs (through the RSS feed links you see on the page), or
your own portfolio data.
(That's not to say that we won't continue to push on our providers to
open up as much data as possible).

I actually have the same question. I'd like to be able to retrieve
information like the INDUSTRY and SECTOR of a stock. This info is
already on the Google Finance page for each stock and would be useful
in the api. Other examples would be the info at the top of a stock's
Google Finance page like Mkt Cap, PE, F PE, Dividend Yield, EPS, Beta.
I think having this kind of data opens up many possibilities for
analyzing the composition of a portfolio.

Is there any plan to support querying and searching detailed company
data via the API?
It seems very stock-centric, but it would be great to get the
