There is a way to detect which version of windows you are using (xp, vista...)

There will soon be an article about it

As for your linux question? Well, what's the point of it? Gadgets only run on windows, and if they would/will run (if or when it gets ported), you are probably gonna get this functionality, but you surely can't check it now.
