How can I only pass the second parameter (arg) and omit the first one (filename). Or any other solution how to a) pass $extension as arg and b) make maildrop deliver to the standard mailbox if there is no .mailfiler.

Have you tried it without any arguments? I use postfix and maildrop as well and I don't use any and it works fine.
