libpcre does not like to be linked static. After ./configure remove the "-static" in maildir/Makefile from "testmaildirfilter_LDFLAGS" and run make.

Which OS do you use?

I forgot to thank you for this bit of advice. It did help me get past my hurdle. And then Sam released another version and I didn't need the change anymore. :^) Thanks to both of you.
