And many games are in top downloads section!  GAMES!!!  Something the top 50 solely lacks...

It was always going to be hard for games to compete in the top 50 because of the originality criteria. If someone had entered a game like Patapon, Drawn To Life, Echochrome or Spore - something new and compelling then maybe we would see some games in the top 50.

However, I don't think there is any doubt games will be big on Android. I've noticed lots of big games publishers talking about Android, I even saw a job advertisement yesterday for an Android developer at a company building games.

The iPhone app store is a good indicator of buying habits though. Look how buyers gravitate towards well known brands like Crash Bandicoot or concepts they are familiar with like Tetris, bowling, solitaire and Bejewelled. Enigmo looks original and is doing well but that was shown at the 3G iPhone launch, on the other hand Glu's Space Monkey is the only other game that I have seen that looks vaguely original and that is sitting at a lowly #76 - beaten by Pong and Whack A Mole games.
