If they don't use Grails, many of them simply have no clear use case for starting to get into it although they would like to. Gradle offers a valid use case to get into Groovy for many Java developers. The common story will be that people know about the broad scope of Groovy but there first active experience will be through Gradle.

Or through unit testing, which is the story I'm often told about, about how Groovy came into an enterprise.

Great, have a good night.

What I'd like to see tomorrow when you wake up, is a list of the good / bad sides of our current Ant-based build, and how Gradle improves on those things or solve problems we may have.

This is a good marketing excercise to make. And if people are to get into Groovy because of Gradle, they need to know why they should use Gradle instead of Ant first. Failing that, I don't see how they can get into Groovy anyway if neither through unit testing code with Groovy or through the build. But fortunately, there are other ways to get introduced to Groovy (DSLs, application plugins, Griffon, and more).
