Hi Jeremy -

Thanks for the quick response, but....

Let me repeat - '10 machines at a community center', not a country club. It costs money to upgrade machines and these machines are otherwise perfectly functional. So, when I ask if you know if upgrading to 10.4 on a Mac PPC is likely to allow Gears to function I am not just being frivolously curious. To be more specific, does the Google Gears group of developers know if Gears will run on a Mac PPC running on 10.4 or 10.5? Are there any reports of Gears NOT being able to run on a Mac PPC OSX 10.4 or10.5?

I appreciate that the work load for the developers is more than any Google user could imagine, and as a person who works in the not-for- profit world I really, really appreciate all the apps and tools that Google creates to empower people who do not have the ability to buy expensive software or pay for server space. I'm not sure you all know what an incredible gift the various Google apps/tools are for the arts and not-for-profit community.

That being said, the issue of PPC/Gears seems like a reasonable question, and I would imagine that you or one of the Gears team would know how to at least do a basic search of the Gears collected knowledge base to see f there is any evidence that Gears can run or can't run on a Mac PPC using OSX 104. or 10.5.

If you could find any time do check on this, I and the community center (which pretty much runs on Google), would really appreciate it.

Thank you in advance. Lis

Thanks for the comment Lis,

To be more precise, the current release version of Gears doesn't run on pre-10.4 systems.

Regarding an upgrade, the bug you reported is specific to pre-10.4 systems.

I can't make any guarantees, I'd really recommend you try upgrading one machine and testing on that.

Best regards, Jeremy

Hi - I don't mean to appear to be contradicting or arguing with a Google Gears person, but you can run an older version of Gears (0.1.56.0) on a PPC 10.3.9, but it will only sync GReader offline, not GDocuments or (I imagine) anything newer, GReader works perfectly.

Jeremy - is it certain that upgrading to OSX 10.4 will correct this issue for a PPC Mac G4 Sawtooth desktop? I have 10 of these machines at our community center, if upgrading will fix the issue it would be a worthwhile expense. Thanks, Lis

Hi Lisa,

Unfortunately this is a known problem, The minimum system version Gears will currently run on is 10.4.

We have a bug open for the root cause of this.

Best regards, Jeremy

I have tried to install Google Gears (Mac OS X version) on my laptop and on my desktop computers, and seem to be caught in some kind of loop... very frustrating!

My laptop is a PowerPC G3 (500 MHz), with Mac OS 10.3.9, and Firefox v. 2.0.0.14.

My desktop is a PowerPC G4 (Dual 450 MHz ), running Mac OS 10.2.8, with Firefox 2.0.0.14.

In both cases, I go to the Google Gears installation page, and click 'Install Google Gears'. I am taken to the 'Terms of Service' agreement, and I click 'Agree and Download'.

Firefox says, "You have asked to install the following item:", and it's gears-osx-opt.xpi (unsigned) from <http://dl.google.com/gears/ current/gears-osx-opt.xpi< http://dl.google.com/gears/current/gears-osx-opt.xpi>>. I tell it to install, and it appears to be loading up in 'Add-ons' (as Google Gears 0.3.14.0), and on this download window, I'm given a button to 'Restart Firefox'. I restart Firefox (to complete the installation), and THE SAME INSTALLER WINDOW is there waiting for me! This could go on and on forever.

If I look in Firefox's Tools (Add-ons), there it is... Google Gears 0.3.14.0, looking good. But the Preferences button isn't functioning, only 'Disable' and 'Uninstall'. Also under Firefox's Tools, I see 'Google Gears Settings', but it's inactive. It's just there.

What the devil is happening?

Thanks...we've tried a variety of things, and the Google Gears website seems unable to acknowledge that I already have Google Gears installed, or at least part of it..
